Pullarao Pentapati - Challenges Before The BJP

There is no doubt that since a year Narednra Modi has led the BJP to great heights. Every survey says that the BJP is poised to get around 180- 200 MPs in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. There is still about 50 days left for the election end. If   “a week is a long time in politics “as ex-British Prime Minister Harold Wilson said 40 years, then 50 days is really eternity. Anything and everything can change. The problem for the BJP is that things are going well and anything can go wrong.

For the main opponent of the BJP, everything has been going badly for the Congress and things cannot get worse. They can only get better. So there is hope on the Congress side.

For the BJP, it is important that they avoid controversial issues. Un-fortunately, in the last week, the BJP has h needlessly riled both L.K. Advani and Jaswant Singh, who are the senior-most leaders. Whether this will have a serious negative impact on the results is difficult to say. But there has been a pause in the public’s positive perception of the BJP.There has been an impression amongst the public that senior leaders are being ridden roughshod.

There was a need for the BJP leadership to concede respect to the seniors in action and not words. . Can the BJP repair the damage?  That remains to be seen. The problem is that when an army, country or an individual sense victory, then they lose all sense of proportion.

The Greeks called this “hubris”. If the Greeks are to be believed, pride or “hubris will” not go un-punished. It remains to be seen whether the BJP has the institutional strength to avoid spoiling the last mile. The Congress party has still some plans left to trip the BJP.
